Astronomy 1 – Canis Major, Orion and Taurus

I know constellations somewhat, but clearly a need came to learn names of stars and constellations. It is a shame to be that illiterate in astronomy. When our reptilian friend said that they are from Taurus constellation, I couldn’t even think of any stars in the constellation. What a shame 🙂

Lets start educating ourselves in basic astronomy. I am usually using couple of interactive tools: Google Earth (which allows to browse skies too) and Star Chart Android App (and Stellarium Android App, thanks Slava). The Star chart allows to point the phone on a star and find out what is its name. As you turn the phone, it shows the sky map with star and planet names. It knows where it is pointed because it has a compass (you have to step away from metal)  and a gravity sensor.

An important understanding is that big stars are actually near us. Our alien visitors typically come from nearby stars – these are big on the sky. Surprise!

I am starting a category “astronomy”.  Please post under this category.

Here is a nice photo map of several important constellations. Click to enlarge.
